Designing process of Rapla-Lelle railway is finished

Reaalprojekt OÜ has finished the designing process for the reconstruction of the Rapla-Lelle railway and building permit for reconstruction works is granted.

The project and its BIM information model have been compiled in accordance with the initial task of the client, the designing conditions and the technical conditions issued by the owners of utility networks located in the area. The project was made in master design stage.

The area covered by the project is located in Rapla county, Rapla and Kehtna municipalities. The process of applying for a building permit for the project was already started in May 2022. Due to the volume of the project and the errors that occurred in the EHR processing environment, the process of the building permit procedure lasted approximately 9 months.

The general goal of the project is the overhaul of the railway and waiting platforms on the section Rapla-Lelle (km 53+342 to km 73+312) based on the needs of modern railway traffic. On the basis of the changed plan solution of the railway, the construction of the new railway will mostly take place on the existing embankment of the Rapla-Lelle railway.

On the existing railway the age of the superstructure reaches 50 years, which is therefore technically and morally outdated and needs reconstruction. Passenger waiting platforms were built in 2012-2013. The following waiting platforms are in use:

– platforms in Rapla, Keava and Lelle with a width of 3.0 m;

– Waiting platforms between the railway in Rapla and Lelle with a width of more than 4.0 m.

The existing access roads to Rapla and Lelle stations required site-specific redesigning.

According to the initial task of the client, Edelaraudtee AS, it was necessary also to carry out the reconstruction of the bridges with concrete structures located at kilometers 55+887, 57+021, 57+305 and 67+477 of the railway and replace them with culverts and metal structure bridges.The ends of the metal structure bridge and the flow bed at the inflow and outflow are secured with stone paving. In terms of new bridges, it is planned to install a flat-profile pipe made of prefabricated steel plates as a project solution. The required wave length of the steel pipe is 200 mm and the height is 55 mm. The required steel thickness is 6.5 mm and strength class S355.

In addition, the scope of work includes the reconstruction of the existing railway bridge at Rapla station and the reconstruction of the Keava waiting platform.

Together with the railway, the existing crossings and overpasses on the Rapla-Lelle section will also be reconstructed:

• Overpass at km 54+355 Rapla station

• Crossing point km 54+791 mnt 20117 Juuru-Rapla

• Crossing point km 58+145 mnt 20250 Hertu-Põrsaku-Keava road

• Crossing point km 61+ 091 mnt 20120 Keava-Hõreda road

• Crossing point km 65+760 local road 2921008 Ohekatku-Linnaaluste road

• Crossing point km 67+261 local road 2921013 Hiie-Paluküla

• Crossing point km 69+473 local road 2920141 Palasi road

• Crossing point km 69+989 mnt 20154 Lelle-Vahastu road

• Overpass at km 71+627 Lelle station

• Overpass at km 71+804 Lelle station

• Crossing point km 72+116 Tööstuse street and local road 2921014 Lalli-Lelle road

Crossing points and overpasses made of concrete slabs are built from TRACKSLAB crossing slabs produced in Rakvere (or similar ones), which are made considering the gauge used in Estonia (in this case, 1520mm). Concrete slab crossing points and overpasses are built according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The crossing made of concrete slabs is intended for normal traffic loads with rubber wheels. The permissible gross weight of the truck is 40t and the axle load is 11t;
